Meaning and history
The Utah Jazz, an NBA franchise, originated not in Utah, but in New Orleans in 1974. The “Jazz” name was a nod to the rich musical heritage of New Orleans. However, in 1979, due to financial struggles and attendance woes, the team relocated to Salt Lake City, Utah, retaining its original moniker.
In the 1980s, the Jazz began to find its rhythm. The drafting of point guard John Stockton in 1984 and power forward Karl Malone in 1985 set the stage for one of the most iconic duos in NBA history.
