Queen is a legendary British rock band formed in London in 1970. The group originally consisted of Freddie Mercury (vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), John Deacon (bass), and Roger Taylor (drums, vocals).
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Queen achieved global fame with their innovative and eclectic music. They released iconic albums like “A Night at the Opera” (1975), featuring the epic song “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Their music combined rock, opera, and pop elements, setting them apart from other bands of the era.
In the 1980s, Queen continued to release successful albums, including “The Game” (1980) and “Hot Space” (1982). They also performed iconic concerts, such as the Live Aid benefit concert in 1985.
Tragically, Freddie Mercury passed away from AIDS-related complications in 1991. His death marked a significant loss for the band and their fans.

1968 – 1970
Prior to adopting the moniker “Queen,” the musical ensemble was known as Smile. Their chosen name was consistent with their branding, featuring album covers adorned with a cheerful, smiling mouth. This mouth was characterized by vibrant red lips and two gleaming rows of pearly-white teeth.
1973 – 1975
Freddie Mercury conceived the initial Queen logo in 1972, but it was unveiled a year later after distribution agreements were finalized. This original artwork adorned promotional materials, music albums, and a prominent drum.
The emblem was designed to incorporate astrological signs for each band member: two fairies for Freddie Mercury (Virgo), a crab for Brian Harold May (Cancer), and two lions for Roger Meddows Taylor and John Richard Deacon (Leo). Above them soared a majestic phoenix with outstretched wings and a blazing flame.
At its heart lies a stylized letter “Q,” subtly alluding to the word “Queen.” Within the circle, a regal crown takes center stage, symbolizing both monarchical authority and the band’s distinctive identity. Interestingly, the logo bears a resemblance to the Royal Coat of Arms of Great Britain, particularly in the depiction of heraldic lions.
1975 – Today
In 1975, the band unveiled an enhanced logo. Freddie Mercury meticulously refined the image, sharpening and refining the lines. However, the core composition remained unchanged: the zodiac symbols representing each musician still encircled the “Q.” Below the image, the word “Queen” was prominently displayed as before.
