Meaning and history

New York Islanders Logo history

The New York Islanders, a high-end ice hockey club founded in the early 70s, rapidly rose from an expansion club to a powerhouse in the NHL, particularly at the beginning of the 1980s when they achieved four straight Stanley Cup victories. Managed by Bill Torrey and coached by Al Arbour, they developed a strong roster featuring members like Mike Bossy and Bryan Trottier, known for their defensive strength, offensive prowess, and excellent goaltending.

Despite challenges post-dynasty, including management changes and financial issues, the team remained resilient, changing their location from Nassau Coliseum to the Barclays Center in 2015, and later announcing another place at Belmont Park – UBS Arena. Their history reflects not just their triumphs but also their adaptability and enduring impact in professional hockey.

1973 – 1995

The inaugural logo features a bold, circular design with the letters ‘NY’ over a silhouette of Long Island, all in orange against a blue background. A white hockey stick forms the letter ‘Y’ and simultaneously acts as a visual element that intersects a miniature orange hockey puck, placed to the bottom left. The word ‘ISLANDERS’ is written in orange at the bottom within the blue circle. The entire design is enclosed within a thin white border.

1995 – 1997

This marks a significant departure from the original design. It presents a nautical theme with a figure of a fisherman, in teal and navy blue, holding a hockey stick. The fisherman is placed over a white hockey puck and set against a triangle outlined in orange. The word ‘ISLANDERS’ is boldly displayed diagonally in front of the fisherman, with a wave-like design underlining the text.

1997 – 2010

Returning to the roots of the original, this logo revises the 1972 design. The ‘NY’ and Long Island silhouette are larger and more defined, with the hockey stick and puck also receiving slight size increases. The colors are a darker shade of blue and orange, and the white border is thicker, providing a more pronounced frame to the design.

2010 – 2017

This logo retains the essence of the 1997 design but with bolder colors and a slight shift in the orange hue. The white outline is removed, giving the logo a cleaner look. The ‘NY’ and the silhouette of Long Island are slightly enlarged, making the details more prominent.

2017 – Today

This modern refinement of the previous logos sharpens the overall imagery with a crisper delineation between the blue and orange elements. The white outline returns, now encircling the entire logo including the text, which gives it a sleek, contemporary feel. The font for ‘ISLANDERS’ remains consistent with the earlier versions but appears more integrated into the circle due to the white border.

The team’s main colors are bright blue, white, and dark orange, presented on a white backdrop. This is the perfect combination to reflect the team’s passion, spirit, and island location.

Font

The name is written in two parts: the ‘NY’ part, where the second character looks like a club, and the ‘Islanders’, featuring extra bold capitalised angular letterforms without serifs.
