Meaning and history

Sheraton Logo history

Sheraton was founded in 1937 by Ernest Henderson and Robert Moore in Springfield, Massachusetts. It started with a single hotel purchase. The name “Sheraton” was chosen after they acquired a hotel with a large sign. Sheraton expanded rapidly, opening its first international hotel in Canada in 1949. By 1965, it was the first hotel chain listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

In 1968, ITT Corporation, a global conglomerate, acquired Sheraton, marking a significant corporate shift. This era saw significant global expansion, reinforcing Sheraton’s international presence. In 1985, Sheraton launched a luxury division, Sheraton Premiere, enhancing its brand portfolio.

The 1990s brought challenges; ITT faced hostile takeover attempts, impacting Sheraton’s operations. In 1998, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide acquired ITT Sheraton. Under Starwood, Sheraton underwent rebranding and modernization, focusing on quality and consistent standards.

In 2016, Marriott International acquired Starwood, making Sheraton part of the world’s largest hotel company. Since then, Marriott has embarked on revitalizing the Sheraton brand. This includes major renovations, reimagining the guest experience, and expanding its global footprint.

Sheraton stands as a testament to adaptability, luxury, and a rich history of hospitality leadership.

The logo is a minimalist yet elegant design, consisting of a bold, serif font that spells out ‘Sheraton’. Adjacent to the text is a square emblem featuring the letter ‘S’ encircled by a laurel wreath, a symbol often associated with victory and status. The classic laurel wreath adds a touch of timeless sophistication, suggesting a heritage of excellence and a commitment to guest satisfaction. The simplicity of the black on a neutral background gives the logo a versatile and upscale feel, ensuring it stands out in the hospitality industry. The design encapsulates the essence of the Sheraton brand: classic, reliable, and distinguished.

1990 – 2019

Sheraton Logo 1990

This iteration of the Sheraton logo displays a more streamlined design, with the ‘S’ emblem and laurel wreath centrally aligned above the brand name. The ‘S’ is bolder and more pronounced within the wreath, conveying a robust and authoritative presence. The text ‘Sheraton’ below is in a serif typeface, which retains a classic feel but with a cleaner, more contemporary finish. The laurel wreath appears more stylized, with leaves that are sleek and uniform, enhancing the overall modernity of the logo. This design underscores the brand’s evolution while maintaining its heritage, reflecting a balance of tradition and innovation.

2019 – Today

Sheraton Logo

In this logo version, Sheraton introduces a softer, more refined look with a muted color palette. The ‘S’ remains central within the emblem but is now encased in a circular, dashed border, giving it a more approachable and contemporary appearance. The wreath, previously a solid symbol of heritage, has been stylized into a series of dashes, simplifying its form and modernizing the icon. The font of the Sheraton name is sleeker and sans-serif, indicating a modern progression while maintaining the brand’s strong identity. This design shift suggests a forward-thinking brand that values its past while embracing the future.
