The logo that was used until 2011 had a very professional and sophisticated feel. It had crimson writing which contrasted well against a white background and expressed the passion and energy of the university. There were four lines, each separated by thin underlines of the same width. Above and below, the logo was framed by a combination of a thin and thicker line. The top line was an abbreviation of the name, which used significantly larger font size, while the next lines spelled out the full name of the university.  All the letters were uppercase.

On the left, the emblem had a shield with a setting sun and three torches, with the middle torch being slightly larger. The sun was meant to symbolize life, while the other three elements stood for science, philosophy, and art. To the right, there were two lines, with the first line being “USC University of” and the second “Southern California”. The two lines combined were of the same height as the shield. USC was highlighted using crimson color, while the rest of the logo was black. The abbreviation was, as expected, written in all uppercase letters, while the full name had only the first letter of each word capitalized. A shield emblem in combination with a classy name had a timeless and at the same time traditional look.
