1842 – 2000
The very first logotype of the VU depicted a dark blue rectangle with 13 thin lines separating the backdrop in multiple equal stripes. Close to the center, the designers wrote the ‘Villanova’ word in a bold handwritten typeface with italic characters. Below it, the word ‘university’ showed up in a serif script with a custom ‘U’. The seal of the university was located to the left of the words.
2000 – 2004
With the new millennium, the university brand designers approved a redesign that completely changed the logo’s appearance. Now, the mark featured an inscription in two levels, written in an elegant cursive typeface with inclined characters. Next to the name caption, they placed the more clear image of the university’s sigil – a roundel with a thick blue frame and white lettering around the perimeter. A blue book with a red burning heart and a golden cross is depicted in the center, surrounded by two green wreath segments. A white ribbon bearing the motto and the “1842” datemark are located at its bottom.
2004 – today
The modern version of the university’s official logotype represents the name caption in a slim title case font with sharp serifs. The upper ‘Villanova’ word is enlarged and dominates the logotype, while the portion ‘university’ has its letters spread far from one another. The seal to the left is also redesigned: it is composed of blue and white hues, displaying a refined emblem with fewer elements and streamlined lines, positioned on the right side of the tripartite lettering, showcased in a graceful serif typeface.
Font
The Villanova University insignia is comprised of a bold, uppercase serif font with full-shaped contours and sharp serifs on the ends of the bars. The font bears a resemblance to Trajan Bold or Transcend Medium, with their sophisticated shapes and distinctive lines.
Color
The color palette consists of a bright and sleek combination of blue and white, symbolizing loyalty, responsibility, confidence, and trustworthiness. Blue represents the professional qualities of the university, while white denotes openness.
