NCT is a conceptual boy band from South Korea that plays music in the genres of key-pop and hip-hop. The members of the group, whose name is an acronym for Neo Culture Technology, do not like to be confused with another Korean band, BTS, which, obviously, happens pretty often.

Meaning and history

At the beginning of 2016, Lee Soo Man, the founder of the SM Entertainment label, gave a presentation on “SMTOWN: New Cultural Technology 2016” at the SM Coex Artium. Under the NCT brand, it was planned to organize debuts of several teams, between which all optimal forms of cooperation will be implemented. This would allow the movement of participants and recruits from the lineup to the lineup.

There was not even a set number of participants for these sub-teams. In early April 2016, a spokesperson for the label announced that the main unit of the boy band would be NCT U, which stands for NCT United. It included trainees from SM Entertainment’s preparatory SM Rookies team.

The group debuted its first division, the rotating NCT U, on April 9, 2016, with the double digital single “The 7th Sense” and “Without You.” The group officially debuted on KBS2’s “Music Bank” show. In China, NCT U debuted at the Top Chinese Music Awards.

Initially, there were six members of NCT U, i.e. the main lineup of the boy band. By 2023 there were 23 members, as the project expanded to include NCT Dream, Chinese sub-band WayV, and Japanese NCT Tokyo.

The summer of 2019 saw the band’s first world tour.

What is NCT?
NCT is an abbreviation standing for Neo Culture Technology, but for the whole world, it is the name of a super popular South Korean boys band, which was created in 2016. NCT, or Neo Culture Technology, is not just a boy band, but a concept invented by the SM Entertainment label from South Korea. The idea was to create NCT divisions in different countries, which turned the group into a truly global K-pop project.

In terms of visual identity, the South Korean boys’ band NCT is very futuristic and stylish. Based on the simplest monochromatic color scheme and strict geometric font, the band managed to create a super progressive and actual logo, which looks powerful and confident.

2016 – Today

NCT Logo

The NCT badge was created in 2016 and by 2023 has never been changed. Even though, sometimes the strict and heavy lettering can be seen in different color variations. The main scheme of the logo is still based on black and white.

The NCT logo is composed of a lowercase inscription in a geometric sans-serif font with the narrowed characters stretched vertically. The distinctive contours and straight angles of the letters are what make the logo memorable and recognizable.

Font and color

NCT Emblem

The minimalistic lowercase lettering from the primary logo of the NCT boys-band is set in a custom sans-serif typeface with square contours of the characters. The closest fonts to the one, used in this insignia, are, probably, Hauptbahnhof or Severe, with some minor modifications of the characters’ contours.

As for the color palette of the NCT visual identity, its main version is set in black and white, which allows placing the logo on various background and accompanying it with different graphical elements, without losing the readability of the inscription.
