Meaning and history

Bulgari Logo history

Originally, Bulgari was a Greek business incorporated in Rome in 1884 by a Greek jeweler Sotirio Bulgari. It has quickly attracted the attention of tourists arriving from across Europe for a tour of Rome. The impressive quality of jewelry made by Bulgari, paired with the attention of the audience allowed the company to expand from a single shop on Via Sistina to several locations across the Italian capital.

The first high-tier jewelry arts date back to the 1920s. These silver creations were made in the French Art Deco style and ornamented with platinum parts and diamonds. The elegant Bulgari style began to advance with the first golden jewels, released in the 1940s. At the time, they also started creating watches – the first watch made by the company was Serpenti, introduced in the middle of the 40s.

Bulgari continued to combinate various materials and stones, introducing colorful jewelry collections in the 1950s and 1960s. In polishing and shaping the gems, the company often used the Cabochon method. It has become a unique sign of the brand’s jewelry since then.

On the wave of success and prosperity, Bulgari entered the European and American markets, opening shops internationally in the 70s. It has inspired Bulgari company to create new refined designs of their decorations and expand the product line. Since then, the Bulgari watch has been a prominent part of the Bulgari product line, along with highly decorated decorations.

In the 90s, Bulgari enriched its brand with the Eau Parfumee – the company’s first fragrance. Another prominent event occurred in 1995 when Bulgari was recorded on Milan Stock Exchange. The next year, Bulgari introduced various collections of silk scarves, leather decorations, and eyewear products. By that time, Bulgari has become one of the most influential brands specializing in accessories.

With the new century, Bulgari began a policy of further expansion. It bought luxury watch-creating brands Daniel Roth and Gerald Genta. Several more acquisitions in the accessories field took place later in the 2000s. Finally, in 2004 Bulgari opened its first hotel in Milan, collaborating with Mariott International.

The next milestone occurred in 2011 when Bulgari signed a strategic alliance agreement with Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, the world’s largest luxury fashion conglomerate. Since then, it has been operating as a part of the group.

Founded in 1884, the company has a rich history documented on its official website. A photograph from 1911 captures the sign of the first store located in Rome, adorned with the inscription “S. Bulgari”. This elaborately styled lettering featured the founder’s initial “S,” for Sotiris Boulgaris, which was later Italianized to Sotirio Bulgari.

1921 – 1928

During this period, the logo underwent modifications with the lettering becoming larger and more pronounced. The glyphs, now decorated with elegant serifs, began to resemble those seen in the current logo. The transition to fully capitalized letters enhanced the similarity to today’s branding. Notably, the original logo included the letter “S” preceding the company name, and uniquely, the second letter in “Bulgari” was “U.”

1928 – 1934

By 1928, the brand’s lettering, “S. Bulgari”, was designed in a highly intricate script. The capital letters “S” and “B” were particularly ornate, featuring excessive curls that served more decorative than functional purposes. Even the lowercase portions of the name “ulgari” were embellished with intricate details. This version marked the last instance where the letter “U” was used as the second character in “Bulgari”, before transitioning to the “V.”

The brand’s unchanging logotype appeared in 1934 when it became a recognized Italian luxury brand. This logotype showed the company’s wordmark in all capitals. The letter ‘u’ is replaced by the letter ‘v’, as a nod of respect to Ancient Rome. Since then, the company’s trademark has been Bvlgari.
