Abercrombie & Fitch is a renowned American retailer, established by David T. Abercrombie and Ezra Fitch in New York City.  A&F appeals to the young with stylish clothes and fragrances, merging classic and contemporary American fashion. Its creation marked the inception of a distinctive retail experience focused on quality and the essence of cool sophistication.

Meaning and history

Abercrombie & Fitch’s saga began in 1892, opening as an upscale sporting goods store in New York. The brand’s evolution is marked by a series of transformations, from an outdoor enthusiast’s haven to a teen fashion giant. In 1904, lawyer Ezra Fitch joined, prompting a rebrand to Abercrombie & Fitch, catering to prominent figures like Roosevelt and Hemingway.

The company flourished but faced a downturn during the Great Depression, though it bounced back by focusing on guns, clothing, and catalog sales. Expansion followed, with new stores in the late 1950s and 1960s, but by the 1970s, financial struggles led to bankruptcy and a closure in 1977.

Rescued by Oshman’s in 1978, A&F switched to mail-order, yet struggled until The Limited, Inc., under Leslie Wexner, purchased it in 1988 for $47 million. Wexner and CEO Michael Jeffries reimagined A&F into the trendy teen retailer known in the 1990s, leveraging provocative advertising and preppy casual wear.

The brand witnessed explosive growth, going public in 1996 and expanding internationally. However, controversies and changing consumer tastes led to a decline, prompting another rebranding effort. The quest for relevance continues as A&F adapts to shifting markets and consumer preferences.
