Asahi, the Japanese beverage company, has a rich history marked by significant changes in ownership and expansion. It was founded in 1889 as the Osaka Beer Company, which later merged with the Sapporo Beer Company in 1906 to form the Dai-Nippon Beer Company.
During World War II, the Japanese government took control of the beer industry, but after the war, the company regained its independence and continued to grow. In 1949, it adopted the name Asahi Beer Co., Ltd.
In the following decades, Asahi expanded its product range to include various alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, becoming one of Japan’s leading beverage companies. The brand’s unique wordmark was meticulously crafted by renowned graphic designer Bret Syfert, recognized under the pseudonym Hyde’s Lovelies. As a freelance professional and a graduate of the University of the Arts London, Syfert not only conceived an unconventional design but also crafted a bespoke Asahi typeface. This font was entirely developed from scratch, with the designer eschewing reliance on pre-existing font styles.
